DJ Turkey's Central Bank Tightens Monetary Policy As Lira Sinks To Fresh Low
By Emre Peker
ISTANBUL--Turkey's central bank Monday said it will begin additional monetary tightening immediately as the lira sunk to fresh lows against the dollar, extending a three-week free fall.
'The goal for the additional monetary tightening is for it to be strong, effective and temporary,' the Ankara-based national lender said in an e-mailed statement. Central bank Governor Erdem Basci has already been reducing liquidity in financial markets by decreasing the amount it lends through daily one-week repo auctions.
Turkish policymakers have also dipped into the central bank's foreign currency reserves, selling about $3 billion in the past couple of weeks to help stabilize the lira. Turkey's currency dropped to a new record of 1.9736 to the dollar in early Monday trading, recouping some of its losses to trade at 1.9671 after the central bank statement.
Mr. Basci said in the statement that the duration of the central bank's additional monetary tightening will depend on developments in foreign exchange markets.
